Verse 2 says, “A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions.” Oh, how true this is. We all have a friend (or are this person ourselves) that has an answer for everything. Anything you’ve done, they’ve done better. Any problem you’ve had, they had it worse. Any advice you have to give, they have better advice that will help quicker. And they have no problem “airing” their opinion to anyone at any time.
This is actually a big problem that I face in my daily life. I know some of you who know me are saying “duh, we’ve known that forever Rick”. I want to help people so much that I tend to “air my own opinions” before thinking. I don’t do it to be malicious or hurtful, but it still can be that way, especially if the opinion I’m giving goes against the Lord’s will. That is why I am working on praying for guidance before giving advice, to ensure that I’m on the same page as God. It is an ongoing process, but one God can definitely cure.
I say this to serve as a reminder and warning to others. If you have that person in your life, one that spouts opinions constantly, pray and think before taking their advice. You see, there are some that truly “run their mouth” to be malicious, with an intention of hurting you, and no desire to learn knowledge, just the delight of “talking”. As I mentioned before, that is not why I do it, but the outcome could be the same, intended or not; an accidental bullet kills just as well as an intended one.
Lord, please help me to guard my tongue, to weigh my responses and my “opinion” on Your scales, to Your plan. Help me to only give advice that furthers Your will and Your Kingdom, all for Your glory only. Also, help me to discern other’s advice to see if it is in Your will or just them blowing “hot air”.
