Verse 13 states, “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.”
To me, this verse shows us the requirements of wisdom. That is, someone who is wise will live a good life, full of good deeds done in humility from wisdom. I am reminded of the “self proclaimed” gurus on television and books, constantly proclaiming why you should listen to their wisdom, for they have done great things. However, as I recall, a lot of the “great things” were done out of selfishness, or at the very least, without humility.
This also lets us know who to seek advice from and from whom to ignore it. That is, when you are given advice, ALWAYS CHECK THE SOURCE. Is it from someone you trust? Are they helping you with wisdom? Or are they giving bad advice? A good way to check is to see their fruits. Are their good lives full of good deeds without “hogging” the credit? If so, they might have great wisdom to give. Do they “toot their own horn”, brag on their accomplishments, and tell you exactly what you’re doing wrong OR exactly how they would handle the situation? If so, this doesn’t sound like wisdom to me.
Remember, check your source. When in doubt, compare it to the Bible’s teachings, if there is any contrast, go with the Bible.
Dear Lord, thank you for Your wisdom and instruction. Please be with us dear Lord to discern true wisdom from the lies of the world. Allow us to help and support one another to further Your plan for Your glory. Amen.
