Paul is speaking to Titus about the Cretans (people from Crete) when he says, (16) “They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him.” Wow, how familiar does that sound?
One of the biggest “turn offs” of Christianity to non-Christians is hypocrisy. Saying one thing and doing another. The “do as I say, not as I do” mentality. This is what was happening in Crete and also what is still happening today. There are many today, who claim to know God, who claim to be Christians, but their actions say otherwise. By doing so, they are giving the wrong impression about true Christians and our faith.
True, none of us is perfect, we will all make mistakes (I do daily), but we must center our lives on God, put Him first, and then take action to ensure He shows through us to others. We must follow Christ as our example, die to ourselves daily, and let Him shine through us to others. When we do, our actions will support our claims and minister to a lost and dying world.
Lord Jesus, please forgive me where I fail you. Help me to glorify you in everything I do, so my actions support my claims of Christianity, and share You, our Savior, with those who need You. Amen.
