“ 7Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him."
Here the verses are referring to the Magi, or the wise men, who were going to worship Jesus. King Herod had no intention of worshiping Jesus, he just wanted to know his location so he could kill him. Later on in the chapter, God reveals Herod’s plan to the Magi, so they go home a different way.
This is a great lesson to all of us, for there will be many who claim to worship Jesus, but they are lying to trick us into believing them or supporting them. So we must be on our guard, in tune with God, through prayer and reading of the Bible, so we will know who is false or real in their faith. If there is ever any doubt, compare their motives and words to the Bible, the Word of God, if it differs, then trust in God, not man.
Lord, please help us to do Your will and follow You only. Help us to discern false people who claim to do your will, but are evil in their desires. Help us to always focus on You dear Lord, and the salvation through Your Son, Jesus Christ, all for Your glory and honor. Amen.
